the one we left behind

2018. Graphite, pastel and spray paint on paper. 97cm x 131cm

Concieved as a pair of drawings, ‘the one we left behind’ and ‘the place you go’ (2017) are reflections on existence and what the states both before and after life might be. The drawings were created by the laying on and taking off of materials until the forms and their environments emerge.

cave

2017. Charcoal, graphite, spray paint & pastel on paper. 117 x 113cm

This large drawing was completed after a series of studies that were undertaken in caves in Borneo. Having been long interested in geology, caves hold a particular fascination for me as they house fascinating geological forms and present history and time in very physical features.

The titling of the drawings as ‘flags’ are a way of cementing that persons existence, however fleeting, and in that sense are a metaphorical planting of a flag in the ground.
